The Ancient Craft of Cement Tiles

Originating in the Iberian Peninsula more than ten centuries ago and becoming fashionable in the 19th Century, cement tiles have graced the floors of grand villas and hotels across the globe.

Cement tile making is a craft that has been passed on from generation to generation.  The techniques of today are the same used by the ancient artisans of the Iberian and Yucatan Peninsulas.  Subtle variations in the pigments and the rate at which each tile batch dries, affects the colors enhancing the hand made characteristics.  Cement tiles are considered a "Green" product, since they are never fired, only pressed and air dried.

Made from cement, sand, marble dust and mineral pigments, these tiles are defined by the brilliant colors, amazing patterns andsignature matte surface that they are sought-after for, today.  Because each cement tile is made by hand, the possibilities to customize them is endless.  Come visit us at Statements to experience the ancient world of cement tiles.

Sisters of the Sun and Moon Mural

Bringing to life landscape architect W. Gary Smith's wonderful mural design, Statements supplied the tile for this lovely mosaic entitled "Sisters of the Sun and Moon."  Working with local tile artist, Alessandra Haines to produce the dancing Beans, colorful Corn Cobs and striated Corn Leaves, this project was a joy.  The grand opening party, at the Ojos y Maños exhibit in the Santa Fe Botanical Garden, will run from 11:30 AM to 6 PM on October 22nd.

I looked forward to my site visits to see the daily progress.  What an amazing addition to the Santa Fe Botanical Gardens spaces:  an amphitheater and metal canopy will be the location for many wonderful events to come.  And the mural is at the heart of it all.

Statements Tile Featured in ShowHouse Santa Fe 2016

ShowHouse Santa Fe is just around the corner, and Statements has played a big part this year as a Turquoise Sponsor.  We supplied tile for six baths, two kitchens, a pantry and a laundry, while working with each designer to realize their vision.

This year, The Fiesta Gala Opening Night Preview is Friday, October 7th, at 6PM, and the home tour is the weekends of October 7th-8th and 15th-16th. Tickets can be purchased, and specific times and dates can be found, on the ShowHouse website.

Proceeds from ShowHouse and donations to the Frank Lopez Memorial Fund go to Dollars4Schools, a local nonprofit that helps underprivileged children get the essentials they need as well as gives teachers and schools the funding they lack for educational enrichment.
